Bridge Works
  • - For hundreds of years the only real bridge Works throughout the Thames in the town, the first stone bridge was begun in 1176, replacing a wooden one which have been around since Roman times. The driving force behind the building of this bridge was a churchman named Peter of Colechurch however, from first, '' he had difficulty raising the money to go ahead with his project. The previous London Bridge is remembered for two things - it had houses built on it and also the heads of traitors were, for all years, impaled over the turrets of their gate at its southern end because a warning to people coming to the town of the fate of those that conspired against the king.
